Several reports have surfaced in the media lately claiming that legendary actor
Paul Newman is in the fight of his life with
lung cancer. The 83 year old's rep, however, has denied the claims the actor is suffering from cancer.
Yesterday, an
AP report said that Newman's long time friend and business partner, AE Hocthner, had confirmed a cancer diagnosis, stating that the actor told him about it 18 months ago. The report did not disclose what type of cancer Newman is suffering from though. Amidst the reports, Newman's rep issued another statement saying "he is doing nicely", which really doesn't confirm or deny reports.
So, whether Paul Newman is battling lung cancer remains a mystery, but it is obvious that he would like to continue to live his personal life, out of the public eye as he has had for the past 50 years.
Battling Cancer Privately
If it is indeed true that Paul Newman has cancer, it is completely understandable why he chooses to remain private about his treatment and prognosis. I cannot imagine while going through chemotherapy or radiation, people commenting on my prognosis based on how bad or good I looked on any given day. How hurtful those comments must be, whether you are a celebrity and accustomed to the tabloid gossip or just "average Joe".
I say we give Paul Newman a break. He has lived a wonderful life, giving so much to others through his
Newman's Own Foundation. He deserves privacy, just like we all do.
