Dana Reeve Succumbs to Lung Cancer

Dana Reeve, wife of the late Christopher Reeve, has succumbed to her battle with lung cancer. Reeve died Monday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Medical Center. She was 44.

The announcement came from the CEO of her foundation, Kathy Lewis.

"On behalf of the entire Board of Directors and staff of the Christopher Reeve Foundation, we are extremely saddened by the death of Dana Reeve, whose grace and courage under the most difficult of circumstances was a source of comfort and inspiration to all of us."

Dana Reeve announced her diagnosis with lung cancer in August 2005. She made a statement in public just this past November that she was responding well to treatment. She appeared optimistic.

Besides being chairwoman for the Christopher Reeve's Foundation, she appeared on Broadway numerous times and acted in a few television shows like "Law and Order".

She will be best remembered for her charity work, as the founder of Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center and as chairwoman of the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

Dana Reeve leaves behind a teenage son, in which she had with actor Christopher Reeve.
